The marriage seemed to flourish on Father’s extended absences. ” Ragtime

About This Quote

"Ragtime" is a musical genre that emerged in the mid-1890s and was famous for its use of African American musical styles and instruments. It is known as the first popular music genre to be purely American and among the first to be called ‘music’. The term "ragtime" was coined at the time, and "ragtime" music soon began to be called ‘rag’ or ‘jazz’. Due to this, it wasn't very long before the term "jazz" was used as a synonym for ragtime.

The reason for this change in nomenclature was due to the fact that jazz had been created by black musicians who were being confined in a racially segregated society. Ragtime, on the other hand, had been created by white musicians who lived in a racially integrated society.
